Random Thought...

Have you ever stepped on a Lego with bare feet? How about banging your arm on something, right where your funny bone is? What's your first reaction? Do you say a cuss word? I bet most of you do. How can you NOT? I mean, "Gosh darn it, that hurt," doesn't seem to be emphatic enough. Maybe you yell it out, or perhaps you say it under your breath, but I bet it pops out. You may even surprise yourself when you say it, but I think it's a very natural reaction when something startling like that happens. Your brain reacts quickly to the feeling, and out pops that cuss word, even if you don't normally swear! Hey, if you don't believe me, let's test it by throwing a few Legos on your living room floor when you don't expect it and see what happens when you step on one. I bet a little (or not so little!) swear word emerges from you. Butttt maybe that's just me...

A comedian I enjoy, Tim Hawkins, has a funny (to me) standup routine about swear words. It’s called “Alternative Cuss Words” (click HERE to watch). I bet you’ll laugh!!!

Pets Are Family Too

Do you have a pet? A cuddly creature such as a dog, cat, or bunny (or maybe something not so cuddly like a snake or a fish)? Either way, you most likely love your little pet as much as if it were your child. You love snuggling with him or her and taking them outside to play, or maybe just running around the house. Either way, they are part of your family.

I have 4 (!) cats and 2 dogs.

My dog, Luke, passed away this spring, and it was incredibly difficult. He had been a part of my life and our family for so many years, and then one day he was gone. It definitely took a toll on me.

My dog Hitch is almost twelve years old, and he has a tumor on his neck. There really is nothing that can be done for him, so I am just enjoying him every day. I love him, give him treats, take him for walks, and just give him all the attention I can, so his last days, weeks, and months are happy ones.

Pets are truly special. If you have never owned a pet before, it may be hard for you to understand just how special they are and what they end up meaning to you. So saying they are like your child is a good way, for those of you who are petless, to understand what they mean to us animal lovers. If you're thinking about getting a dog or cat (or a snake or fish), but you're not sure if you will like it, do it. You won't regret your decision, and you may even end up with a little friend who fits right into your home and family.

Working From Home Confession #5: An Extended Break

Sometimes I give myself an extended break…

Not often, but once in a while, a close friend of mine or my mother will pop over to say “hello” or drop something off—or even stay for coffee!!

I love those rare visits. Even if they can’t stay long, it’s fun to take an extra break (and get my face out of the computer!) for a short bit.

If you own your own business and work from home, give yourself a little extra break once in a while and invite someone over for coffee, take a walk, or meet them out. Life is short; we need to live it to its fullest!

Book Series... Do You Binge?

These are my thoughts about reading a book series and waiting for the sequels to come out.

I almost always wait until the entire series is finished so that I can read it all at once (a “binge read”) when they’re out.

I also don't read a series if it's more than four or five books because those can get ridiculous (except when I was younger. I loved The Babysitters Club, Sweet Valley High, etc.).

I hate the suspense, so of course I don’t want to read the first or second book in a series and then have to wait an entire year or so for the next one to come out!

This isn’t just with book series, though. If I love an author, I can’t wait until their next book comes out. My grandma and I used to be so impatient for Mary Higgins Clark (God rest her soul) to publish her next book!

What do you think? Do you like reading book series, and is it worth the wait? What’s your favorite series? Let me know in the comments below!

What's YOUR Obession?

Everyone has at least one obsession in their life. Something they gravitate toward, can't get enough of, and will find a way to pay for… you get the point. As you may or may not know, I am obsessed with purses. Yes, that's right. I have an extensive purse collection, and I just can't seem to get enough! I love bigger totes, smaller clutches, designer, inexpensive, colorful, neutral—you name it! I like different purses for different occasions, different seasons, and different styles. I can come up with a good reason to buy a new purse most of the time.

Now, my best friend? She is obsessed with clothes. That's right. She loves any and all clothes. She saves her extra money to buy new clothes (even though she has a closet full). She is always putting clothing items in various carts for different clothing stores that she will, at some point, pull the trigger to purchase. I don't really mind her obsession, though, because when her closet gets too full, she cleans it out and gives me a bunch of new things to wear. Win-win for both of us!

Other people obsess about animals, money, shoes, sports, cars, tools, home décor—you name it, someone somewhere probably obsesses about it!

What about you? What do you obsess over?

Another Week... More Mishaps

It’s a short work week this week and already Wednesday, so I figured my day should be a piece of cake. I should know better. This is MY crazy life we are talking about.

Before I over-boiled some eggs, causing them to explode (and ruining another pot...see my latest YouTube video), my day started off with a trip to the grocery store to pick up a few items. No problem. I had a large package of ground beef in my cart, and when I handed it to the cashier, I noticed that it was leaking blood. So gross, but I figured she would put it in a separate plastic bag. She did not. She put it right in with the two packages of coffee. I peeked in the bag when I put them in my car, and there was blood all over the packages. I mean, c’mon. All I could do was roll my eyes.

Speaking of putting bags in my car, I had a bag of ice in my cart, and when I went to put THAT in the car, ice went EVERYWHERE. Apparently there was a hole in the bag. I can’t make this stuff up! Needless to say, that ice melted very quickly because of the heat. At least it wasn’t the entire bag.

My last stop was to pick up a couple things at the liquor store. I was wearing my cheap flip-flops today and proceeded to trip while leaving the store with a box of wine in my hands. Thankfully, I did not drop the wine, but I fell slightly into the car as I was trying to catch myself. Should leave a nice little bruise.

All in all, today was not unlike many of my days—one full of funny mishaps that keep me on my toes. I wouldn't mind an uneventful day where I don't end up dropping something, having to clean up a yucky mess, or falling over and getting bruised. But then what would I write about?

Goodbye Summer... Hello, Fall

I can't believe it's already September! (Here, though, it feels like summer...I think we hit 90 deg today!!) July and August seemed to go by so quickly. The summer is often a busy time for people, filled with outdoor activities, events, and vacations (especially those with a very limited summer like here in Upstate New York!).

I can already see the leaves slowly starting to change colors...little hints of fall here and there. The nights are getting cooler and darker earlier. Kids are already back to school or getting ready to go back. People are beginning to look forward to making warm soups again for dinner.

Society is always in such a huge hurry to get to the next season or holiday (such as stores selling pumpkin spice coffee at the end of the summer... but I did cheat and had my first on August 30th! I couldn't resist...). Halloween candy is already on the front shelves, and costumes are being displayed. Thanksgiving Day décor usually comes out in mid-October. Christmas toy ads start showing up early November.

What are we in such a hurry for? I do know that a lot of it is marketing. Businesses want people to start looking for gifts to buy for the next holiday. It's understandable. Some of it, though, is just a reflection of our fast-paced society. We're always looking ahead to the future to plan the next event, and we often neglect the present. So even if summer isn't your favorite season, spend some quiet time reflecting on what you are grateful for at this moment. How can you make the most of the time you have now?

Are you ready for fall, or are you still hanging onto summer? I'm definitely a fall girl. Which season do you like better?
