"Hello. My name is Melanie, and I burn food."
If there were a group for people who burned food while cooking, I’d probably be the star. I say “probably” because apparently, my dear friend Susan burns food as much as I do. Maybe she and I can host the group. We can call it Food Burners Anonymous or Horrible Cookers Unite.
Vegetables, potatoes, rice, meatloaf, chicken, fish, hamburgers, eggs…you name it, I’ve burned it. I’ve even set a potholder and wooden spoon on fire! Oh, and let’s not forget about the meatloaf that burned, and the drippings caused the oven to catch fire. That was fun.
We’ve been through a few pots because I burned something so badly the pot was not salvageable. Just last night, I burned potatoes and the pot was ruined.
Let’s talk about WHY I burn food.
Because…
I. Don’t. Care.
That’s right. I don’t give a hoot about cooking. If I were single, I’d probably live on takeout and hot pockets (YUM!!).
I set something on the stove to boil, and I walk away. Then I forget.
I put something in the oven and even set the timer! The timer goes off, I check whatever is in the oven, decide it needs more time, and walk away. Then I forget.
See? I don’t cook with love. Because I don’t want to cook. So I don’t care. I SHOULD care. I mean, I do love my husband and should be providing the meals since I work from home, and he doesn’t. But I can’t make myself love cooking.
I try. I really do.
But sometimes, things burn. How are YOU in the kitchen?
