“You can’t take ibuprofen, then continue beating your head with a hammer.”
My husband said that to me one day, using it as a metaphor. Never had I heard that before, but it completely rings true!!
Here are a few examples of how we, as humans, do this.
A person with a condition such as acid reflux, who knows what they should and shouldn’t eat and drink, but they eat and drink those things anyway. Then the acid reflux flares, and they complain.
Someone complains that they don’t have enough money to pay the bills, but they spend money on cigarettes or Dunkin’ coffee or eating out (or all three!!) every week. Do you know how much that adds up to??? PAY BILLS FIRST!
A woman complains that her husband isn’t giving her a lot of attention, and she wonders why, yet she wears (or changes into after work) comfy clothes/sweatpants every day and doesn’t bother with makeup.
Those are a few of tons of examples I can think of. What can we do about this? CHANGE.
If you know you have a medical condition, DO WHAT THE DOCTOR SAYS!! (Or the internet, however you play it.)
If you find you’re short on money for the bills, pay them first and CUT OUT THE NEEDLESS EXTRAS. Prioritize!!
If your husband (or wife) isn’t giving you the attention you think you deserve, ask yourself WHY? Are YOU giving him/her attention? Are YOU lazy in your appearance or making an effort to look good? Sometimes our significant others want to see us dressed up a little—even if it’s jeans and a sweater or a nice shirt!
So, I’ll repeat: You can’t take ibuprofen then continue beating your head with a hammer.
