March...In Like A Lion

I’ve heard the saying, “March in like a lion, out like a lamb,” but never understood it. Growing up, I thought it simply meant the weather would be crummy (I mean, we live in upstate NY; can’t expect good weather in March!), and then come April, the weather would turn nice. That is part of it.

From www.wavy.com:

According to the Farmers’ Almanac, the weather folklore stems from ancestral beliefs in balance, meaning if the weather at the start of March was bad (roaring, like a roaring lion), the month should end with good weather (gentle, like a lamb).

Also from www.wavy.com

Another theory gives the saying a biblical origin.

“Jesus’s first appearance was as the sacrificial lamb, but he will return as the Lion of Judah, hence those symbolic animals,” The Guardian writes. This may also stem from the Easter holiday, which lands sometime between late March and into April.

My thoughts: both are correct.

Given how March has been for me thus far (it’s only the 13th!!), I’d tell you March certainly has “come in like a lion,” and I mean that in a personal sense.

I have swollen nerves on the top of my right foot and walk with a limp; I had a shard of glass fly into my eye (thankfully, there was no scratching); three dogs with three different vet visits (AND thinking we had to say goodbye to our 14-year-old dog already), among other things. All in the past two weeks.

All that to say, I was feeling bad for myself this past Saturday, but after meeting my two-week-old granddaughter on Sunday—holding her and talking to her—I realized that the past two weeks were just bumps in the road. And it could be worse.

I’m relatively healthy; I have friends and family who love me; I have a successful editing business (recently transitioned to a publishing business)…and so much more.

So last night before bed, I thanked God for the good things and thanked Him for seeing me through the bad. I woke up this morning and did the same thing.

See, March can come in like a lion via the weather or sickness or stupid little inconveniences in our lives, but if we hold onto faith and keep our thoughts on the GOOD in our lives, the bad stuff isn’t so bad.

  1. Sometimes we need that distraction to know that things could be worse (even if we don’t want to think how much worse it could be).
