I recently watched the movie “The Help” and am so glad I never read the book. The movie upset me…a lot. Have you read the book or seen the movie?
So,
these rich, “hoity-toity” women (FAKE women, I might add) are sooooooo uppity
because their husbands earn a lot of money and they can afford a maid. What do
they do? They treat the maids like crap because they’re Black. Not all of them
mistreat them, but the movie portrayed some who were absolute JERKS to these
maids. Because of their color!!!
You may say, “Oh, that was then; it’s better now.” Is it? Is it, really? And I’m not talking about color as much as a person’s occupation. Do you smile at or greet a janitor or maintenance person, or do you snub them, thinking of them as people who can’t get anything better than the job they have?
What about garbage men? Maids? Nannys? Waitresses?
The movie upset me because of the way these maids were treated because they were Black, but it got me thinking about how society thinks of people of ANY race for the job they have.
I’ve had so many jobs; I probably have worked in almost every field imaginable. I’ve had to take out trash even at office jobs! I’ve changed diapers and cleaned up vomit. I’ve served coffee to my bosses. And I learned from each job. I made friends. I made a difference!
So don’t turn up your nose on someone who picks up trash or cleans up vomit for a living. Don’t be a jerk to your housekeeper or someone who waits for you at a restaurant. It doesn’t matter what you do or how much money you make; it matters that you’re WORKING, and maybe you really are making a difference. No one is beneath another. No one.
